Kusini Water
Murendeni Mafumo of Kuseni Water explained how the entity uses waste macadamia nut shells, solar power and nano-fibres to build low-pressure water purification systems supplying drinking water for communities with no access to clean water. To do this, Kusini finds, trains, supports and partners with local youth and leaders to operate and run Kusini water technology and water kiosks in their communities. “This helps communities very quickly adapt to climate change – allowing them to see and taste and adapt their own water, and own it themselves,” Mafumo said.
The judges said Kusini is a compelling example of a sustainable solution to tackle the problem of access to drinkable water and that it is “innovative and holistic – an excellent marriage between upcycling and technology”.
